I'm excited to share a new freebie with you that will hopefully help you get through the next few weeks of the school year.  These are summer themed journal prompts (11 total) with QR codes that students must scan in order to see the prompt.  I recently started using QR code journal prompts during Daily 5 and the kids love the novelty of being able to go in the back of the room and scan a QR code.  I would recommend laminating these and putting them on a metal ring near a mobile device that can scan QR codes.  Click the image below to get these for free.  While you are here, be sure to check out my freebies page where you can find lots of techie as well as non-techie freebies.:)

Mentor Text Linky- The Great Kapok Tree


I’m linking up with Collaboration Cuties with one of my all-time favorite books—The Great Kapok Tree.


Two men walk into the Amazon rainforest with the intention of cutting down a large kapok tree.  While the one man takes a nap, several animals come up to him and whisper in his ear reasons to not cut down the tree.  This book helps students understand how the simple act of cutting down one tree can affect so many different species of animals.  The author even leaves a note for the readers at the end about the importance of rainforests and how we need to help protect them.

This is a great book to read while studying ecosystems—rainforests in particular.  It also lends itself to so many important reading strategies—questioning, main idea, and cause and effect.  I’ve also used it as a mentor text for persuasive writing since each animal gives a reason for the man to save the tree.  I’ve had students write a letter to the man convincing him to not cut down the tree.  This would be a perfect book to read for Earth Day tomorrow as well!   

Five for Friday


Yayy, it’s finally Friday and that means it’s time for 5 for Friday and Friday Flashback

1. We invaded our reading buddies’ classroom with QR codes!  My fourth graders have been having so much fun doing QR code scavenger hunts in math that we decided to do some primary ones with our first grade reading buddies.  If you haven’t already, feel free to grab my primary or upper elementary freebies.:)


2. We got a double-dose of reading buddies this week because we invited them up to watch our planet presentations.  My kids worked in groups to complete either a Keynote or a Prezi on their assigned planet.  They loved being the experts and answering the little ones’ questions.


3. We recently started doing literatures circles and so far it’s been going really well.  I don’t know why it took me all year to start doing novels, but I plan on starting a lot earlier next year because they are so engaged in their reading.


4. We went on a field trip to the Chicago History Museum and had a blast.  This was the favorite exhibit of my group of six boys, go figure!  We have a lot of Cubs/Sox rivalry within our classroom.:)


5. I stumbled upon this Instant Poetry Forms website for kids.  There are so many different types of poems to choose from and the kids just fill in the blanks and it generates the poem for them.  Our theme was spring and I had them print and illustrate their poems to put up in the room.

Tried it Tuesday- Prezi


I'm linking up again for Holly's Tried-it Tuesday to share how I used Prezi for the first time with my fourth graders.  We have been studying the human body systems and after lots of research on Gooru, my students made Prezis to present their information.  I asked my tech coach (hey, Mona!) to come in since it was our first time using Prezi and it went really well.

She recommended that we choose one of the various templates Prezi offers so the kids didn't have to insert frames and worry about the "paths."  I was amazed at how user-friendly Prezi is.  All the kids really had to do was drag in the pictures they already had on their desktops and insert text in the given text boxes.  

I definitely plan on using Prezi in the future for the kids' presentations and even presentations of my own.  To see an example of one of their Prezis, click HERE.

When they were all finished, I copied the links to each of their Prezis (since I had them all under one account) and generated QR codes using QR Stuff.  Then I dragged them onto these little posters to display in our room.  We plan on sharing our Prezis with our first grade reading buddies and anyone else that stops by our classroom with a QR code scanner.:)
